PERFECT PROPOSAL: On the morning of Thanksgiving in 2001, Dee woke Sue up and said she wanted to give her something. Dee brought in a box containing two long-stem red roses with loose rose petals surrounding them. She told her that the events of the last year and the occurrence of the September 11th tragedy had made her think about what was really important in her life. Sue then noticed a diamond ring tied on a ribbon around the roses. It was the beginning of a 15-year engagement!
THE SETTING: Located in Deep Ellum at the corner of Hickory Street and Second Avenue, Hickory Street Annex was the ideal venue for Dee and Sue’s wedding. The warehouse building was the perfect combination with the feel of an urban loft for warmth from the wooden ceiling to the iron tresses. The couple loved the unique first-floor area for cocktails and the large room on the second floor with space for both the reception and the ceremony. They even converted the ceremony space to a game room afterward – complete with ping pong, air hockey and arcade games! Michelle, the director at Hickory Street Annex, did an excellent job helping Dee and Sue create the perfect space for their wedding, along with their incredible wedding planner, Sue Kelson, who hand-picked each and every vendor for their day.
HUES SHE USED: Dee and Sue wanted a wedding that would be simple yet elegant and reflective of their lifestyle. They used natural materials to add luxury and warmth to the event and to complement their industrial venue. They brought in vignettes of furniture in natural linens, grays and blues, as well as farm-wood tables and wooden cross-back chairs with linen cushions.
SAVORY SWEETS: Dee and Sue had four cakes adorned with real flowers and ivory or white frosting. The first cake was a three-tier white cake with strawberry cream and amaretto buttercream filling. The second was a single layer carrot cake, the third was a single layer chocolate cake, and the last was a single layer red velvet cake.
SPECIAL TOUCHES: Converting their ceremony room to a game room was a huge hit with their guests! Every guest, from young to old, had a blast and enjoyed the festivities. For those who loved to dance, they had a DJ to entertain them all evening. As they looked back on the pictures, they loved to see relatives of all ages playing games with guests they had never met before. They created a party that anyone could enjoy!
